As Comic-Con was going on taking over all of Downtown San Diego, Chicanocon was in full swing for its fourth year jam-packed with activities, signings and a special panel featuring artists Lalo Alcaraz, Javier Hernandez, and Junco Canché.
With all the great nerdy vibes and smiling faces at Border X Brewery in Barrio Logan, one would think that this was really the only con happening.
Saturday’s panel was amazing as it was more of an intimate chat between friends with the fans asking questions and becoming a real part of the entire experience.

The questions from the fans were interesting and the artists answered them with honesty and no remorse as some of the questions were political and required an unabated response.
The event was also a fundraiser for Border Angles with a percentage of the bar and art sales going to the organization.
A mix of people attended the event which is not surprising as comics transcend gender, ethnicity and color.
What makes this event absolutely cool is that it’s held in a local brewery run by owners who love comics.
David Favela, one of the owners of the bar and restaurant, told the Orange County Register, he used comics to learn English.
He also wanted to give kids from the barrio, who wouldn’t be able to go to Comic-Com access to the medium of comics, so that they would be able to enjoy the benefits of reading and storytelling.
The tacos and cerveza along with the laid back environment gives it a Mexican Cheers feel. The art by Junco Canché that covers the walls shows the pride and love of the Mexican heritage.
Favela and his crew said they are already planning next year’s event and we can’t wait to make it part of our Comic-Con stops.
